Transition Supports Road Angel Growth
|
 |
The development of leading edge solutions often requires a wide range of skills.
When Road Angel devised an innovative system for motorists
.It selected Transition Computing for specialist
help with database development and customer
interaction applications.
Road Angel produces driver safety systems that
utilise the capabilities of
GPS (Global Positioning System). The company's
original flagship product was RoadAngel, a sophisticated
system that alerts motorists to the presence of known accident blackspots, and fixed and mobile
camera locations. It has become and remains the market-leading product in the UK.
In recent years Road Angel have released a range of
satellite navigation products in both the United
Kingdom and internationally and Transition Computing have
supported their design, development and launch with
their development, database design, hosting and
support services. |
A case of communication
 |
One key element that RoadAngel needed was communications software that would enable both the database
and individual units to be updated with new information. Specialist help was required to develop this.
Technical Director, Stuart Bowden-Rook, says: "We needed to find a versatile company, following a recommendation from our Sales Director, we contacted Transition Computing and asked if they
could help."
Transition Computing, a software development
consultancy based in Milton Keynes, embarked on developing a solution
that included RoadAngel and server communications; PC Internet communications software; modem connection software; and
an intuitive software installation CD for users. These
all had to be provided within very tight deadlines.
They would enable users to update their device with
the GPS co-ordinates of new cameras and blackspots
by connecting to the server. They would also keep
the server updated with new location data. |
Performance under pressure
 |
David Gibson, Managing Director of Transition Computing,
comments: "Over 300,000 customers use RoadAngel, all with different
ability levels, so the software had to be extremely robust and very easy to use. It had to be very reliable, as it
would be difficult and expensive to roll out amendments to such a large user base."
The system was successfully developed and within ten weeks of the launch,
RoadAngel became the sector leader. David Gibson
continues: "This is a fickle market and companies need to remain innovative. We are continuing to provide
RoadAngel with the
technical support they need to develop new ideas quickly. We are helping them to bring new products to market and are also looking
at supporting their back-end processes."
Stuart Bowden-Rook concludes: "We are delighted with Transition's solution, which plays a vital role in the effectiveness of
RoadAngel. During its development, we put a lot of pressure on Transition, but they never failed to deliver. They manage any
issues quickly and effectively, and give real value for money."
This project required a team with an extremely wide ranging set of skills, multiple disciplines including tcp/ip protocols on servers,
PDAs, Limited GUI hand held device constraints, communications via GPS, Hayes AT command sets as well as Windows PC application development.
