Access is a relational database management system (RDBMS) that is included in some versions of Microsoft Office. In its basic form it is comprised of the Microsoft Jet Database Engine, a simple graphical user interface (GUI) and a range of software development tools, but it can be used with Microsoft SQL Server instead of the Jet Database Engine.
Access is an intuitive database program that is designed to allow users to create their own tables, queries forms and reports and link them together with macros. It can be used in its ‘raw form’ and will function adequately as a basic database. But it really comes into its own when it is used as the back end to a purpose built user interface, with specifically designed input and query forms, which can enhance user control and data manipulation.
As one would expect, Access allows import from and export to most of Microsoft’s Office components (e.g. Excel, Word and Outlook). It can also access data from other sources, like Lotus 1-2-3, Open Office, ASCII, dBase, Oracle and SQL Server.
